Challenge

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, located on eastern Long Island, NY, plays a vital role in providing clinical care to its local communities while also serving as a hub for public health education and medical training. Following its merger with Stony Brook University, the hospital faced a transformational opportunity—to expand access to university resources and reimagine healthcare delivery on the East End of Long Island.

At the core of this transformation was a $350 million capital campaign to fund the construction of a new, state-of-the-art hospital on the Stony Brook Southampton College campus and to enhance ancillary care sites across the region. A critical component of this vision included a new emergency department in East Hampton, with an initial campaign goal of $35 million. With this ambitious undertaking, the hospital and its foundation needed strategic guidance to plan, launch, and sustain a campaign of this scale.

Solution

Orr Group partnered with Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Foundation to provide comprehensive campaign strategy and management support. Beginning with foundational planning, Orr Group collaborated with hospital and foundation leadership to develop a detailed campaign plan, including a timeline and a compelling case for support that aligned with the hospital’s bold vision.

Orr Group conducted sphere-of-influence conversations, peer organization benchmarking, and geographic donor research to identify prospective campaign committee members and new donors. With those insights, the team helped cultivate leadership donors, develop campaign branding, and launch two dedicated campaign committees to support fundraising efforts for both the new hospital and the East Hampton Emergency Department.

As part of its strategic work, Orr Group designed a naming opportunities strategy for the new hospital and crafted customized proposals for top prospects. The firm also coordinated closely with stakeholders—hospital leadership, the foundation, architects, and donors—to ensure alignment and momentum across campaign phases.

Orr Group’s strategic partnership laid the groundwork for the hospital’s campaign success. The East Hampton Emergency Department campaign surpassed its initial $35 million goal, reaching $38 million and prompting a goal increase to $40 million. Early lead gifts were secured for the broader hospital campaign, and momentum continued through both the leadership and early public phases.

With a strong campaign infrastructure in place, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital was well-positioned to engage its community and donor base in realizing its long-term vision—expanding access, enhancing care, and transforming healthcare delivery across the East End of Long Island.
