The National Mall in Washington DC occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of all Americans and serves as an enduring reminder of the country’s complex and storied history. As an official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, The Trust for the National Mall (TNM) is dedicated to improving, preserving, and restoring the National Mall.

After turnover at the CEO level and in the development department, TNM turned to Orr Group to take over the fundraising for its annual benefit luncheon. The event was a resounding success, surpassing the prior year’s fundraising results and raising more than $1.4 million in just a few short months. TNM used Text-to-Pledge technology for the first time, which alone contributed an additional $100,000 to the on-the-day fundraising total.

At the same time, TNM retained Orr Group to assess its overall fundraising strategy and development operations. Working closely with TNM, Orr Group designed a practical, action-oriented road map to strengthen and rebuild fundraising operations to meet budgeted revenue goals and build the foundation for significantly increased future revenue. Over a nine-month period, Orr Group served as the Chief Development Officer, driving the implementation of the recommendations in the roadmap and taking direct accountability for the team and fundraising goals.

During that period, our team led all development operations including major gift, corporate, and foundation giving. We undertook a significant restructuring of TNM’s systems and donor database to develop its donor pipeline, moves management processes, and dashboards for transparency and accountability. We also provided board development, recruitment and management guidance and support, overhauling the Board of Directors’ roles and responsibilities, and restructuring and rebuilding Board Committees.

We developed a pipeline for board recruitment that resulted in a qualified pipeline of 20+ prospects and at least one successful board hire. We also led the conception and planning for a gala to celebrate TNM’s 10th anniversary and led the fundraising effort to reach an ambitious $1.7 million goal.
