The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others have shone a light on structural inequities, including those of the nonprofit sector. This raises questions the team at Orr Group has been wrestling with, collectively and as individuals, for the past several years. Why are nonprofit leaders and board members not more reflective of the communities they serve? Do predominantly white and cisgender fundraising staffs by their very makeup disenfranchise donors who don’t look like them? What better solutions is the sector missing out on because the voices at the table are homogenous? As a firm that has leveraged teamwork and collaboration as core differentiators, how can we truly unlock that potential by building a team that is diverse and a culture that is equitable and inclusive? How can we best impact change?
While we don’t have the answers, we firmly believe the conversations and actions that are happening now are advancing the sector and society. Over the past several months, we have found great value in engaging in dialogues on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve welcomed our community of colleagues into these conversations via our ongoing webinar series and would like to do the same as we wrestle with combating systemic inequities to our building a more just sector and world.
